What's it like to be a Finance Manager?
A Finance Manager is in charge of ensuring the financial wellness of a company, managing its financial resources and ensuring that the company maintains its legal financial practices. A Finance Manager is responsible for coming up with financial reports, direct investments, and also strategizes the company’s financial planning, providing support to executive managers in helping them determine how to pay liabilities and ensure good business.
Tasks and duties
- Creating, compiling and submitting financial reports.
- Projecting and analyzing financial and industry trends.
- Making recommendations to senior management members.
- Planning and monitoring the company budget based on the organization’s needs.
- Analyzing market trends and competitors.
- Reporting and making recommendations to managers and stakeholders about major financial decisions.
- Developing strategies that minimize financial risk.
- Creating business plans that secure the company’s financial future in the long term.
A Finance Manager is expected to be detail-oriented, with an ability to project future financial trends that will guide the company on how to best reach its financial goals and grow the business.
How to become a Finance Manager
Finance Managers may gain advantage with a degree related to finance, accountancy, economics, business administration, or applied mathematics. Extensive experience is also required to gain this role.
- Obtain a college degree, preferably in any of the following fields: finance, accountancy, economics, business administration, or applied mathematics.
- Consider completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree or a Master of Science in Finance (MSF) degree.
- Gain years of experience in a finance-related field and work towards a leadership role. In most cases, loyalty to and familiarization of a company is important for managerial roles.
